We try to get out to Wheat Street at least once a month, but work on our documentary, GROW! kept us away. These photos are from our first spring visit. Scroll down and you'll be able to see the progress. Thanks to the efforts of many volunteers, farm staff and donations, the farm is now up and running and selling vegetables every Friday from 3-7 p.m. off Auburn Ave. at 75 Hilliard Street N.E. Atlanta, 30312.

Starting in June, there will be 3 sessions of Summer Camp, a fun-filled opportunity for kids 7-14 to learn all about growing food along with participating in games, art, swimming, and to keep them on their toes, a little reading and writing.

55 raised beds sit on concrete pads of the former low income housing project

On a vacant lot in downtown Atlanta where low income housing projects once stood, Rashid Nuri, Visionary, Urban Farmer and Educator is realizing his dream of an urban organic farm. The 4 acre site is leased from the historic Wheat Street Baptist Church. The vision for the farm includes 100 fruit trees, vegetables, beehives and flowers, bringing beauty and much needed fresh food to an area that could be described as a food desert. The farm will provide, not only food, but also educational and work opportunities for the neighborhood.

The seed money for the project was provided by the Atlanta Falcons Youth Foundation and the EPA. Since the groundbreaking on December 5th, in-kind and monetary donations are helping to keep the project going and expanding. There's still lots to do.

We're into our final stretch of filming and now we need a little help. So far, with the support of a few friends, our film has been self financed. We're looking to raise some funding for post-production costs - all the things we can't do ourselves, otherwise we wouldn't be asking.

We've launched an on-line fundraising campaign at Kickstarter and we're asking for your help.

Awhile back we did a posting about the documentary film we're working on about young, organic and sustainable farmers in Georgia called GROW! We post a lot of our photos on the GROW! movie blog, but since we can't post all of them to that site, we've decided to post some of the shots here.

Bethesda Home for Boys believes in a strong practical work ethic for their students, and to that end they have a small cattle operation, video production facilities and last year added the 4 acre organic garden. Reid Archer and his wife Caroline, run the farm which has a small CSA and an on-site Farm Stand.

Last year, Joe Reynolds' crops were destroyed by flood waters rushing over his fields. The waters also took with them valuable top soil. This year, to protect the farm from losing topsoil in the event of another flood, and to help rebuild the soil, he is using no-till practices.

We were out filming Joe and his interns for GROW! and he asked us to put together this demo video to share with other farmers.

For those of you who have been following along, you probably know about FARM!, our first documentary about young farmers in Georgia.

We filmed it on a Flip Ultra in 2008. It was an official selection of the 2009 Rome International Film Festival and also showed at the EcoFocus Film Festival in Athens. Thousands of people have seen it online and at various private screenings. It is also part of the permanent collection of the Centro Internazionale Crocevia in Rome.

That was two years ago and a lot has happened to our original farmers since then. Along the way, we've also met more new young farmers. We picked up a Panasonic HPX170HDP2 camera. And we decided to make a new film, bigger and better than the last one. It's called GROW!

There is a burgeoning agricultural movement taking place in Georgia. GROW! provides a look at this brave new world of farming through the eyes and minds of young, new and seasoned farmers, their mentors, enablers and community supporters.

Because our food system is broken, our hope for GROW! as with FARM!, is to encourage more young people to take up farming, to offer a good argument for people with land to turn it over to young farmers and for communities to support these endeavors.

Anybody who appreciates the value of good wholesome food grown close to home, who cares about our food supply and the future of farming will want to see GROW!

We will be posting photos, film clips and updates as we go along. Stay tuned and GROW!

For a piece we're working on for a marketing association of small sustainable and organic farmers, we headed out to Tallapoosa, GA to interview Brian Heatherington of Beech Creek Farms. Brian grows several kinds of amazingly delicious apples utilizing sustainable growing methods like IPM (integrated pest management) and solar power to run his irrigation system. Besides the apples he also grows peaches and a variety of vegetables on what used to be his family's dairy farm.

This morning we went out to interview Nicolas Donck of Crystal Organic Farm for the USDA project we're filming. One of the organic pioneers of Georgia, he started farming 15 years ago. We found him amongst the watermelons where he was sampling the first to come off the vines. Three more days of sunshine and they will be sweet and ready for the Saturday Morningside Farmers Market in Atlanta. Although this one tasted pretty good.....

We are standing in the middle of a field with a million sunflowers and a billion bees buzzing about. We went down to shoot footage for a film we're working on for the USDA and found ourselves, like the bees, drawn to the sunflowers. Jenny's dad plants them every year and if you are down in Pine Mt. you must stop by, see Chris and Jenny, their farm and the sunflowers.

Documentary photography often concerns itself with recording a passing way of life. Wife and husband team Christine and Owen Masterson, who do business as Anthony-Masterson, invert this tradition, using still and video cameras to show what could be.

For the past three years, the Mastersons have been working closely with the non-profit Georgia Organics to promote and encourage sustainable and organic farming in the state of Georgia and around the rest of the United States. They began their pro bono project in 2005 when they moved to Atlanta from Los Angeles, and, being dedicated foodies, had a hard time finding farmers' markets where they could purchase local foods.

"We wanted to put faces on farming," says Christine of the couple's mission, "and to make farmers rock stars."

For the first two years, the Mastersons primarily photographed farmers, farms and food, creating images that Georgia Organics and the farmers themselves could use on Web sites, postcards, publications, and promotional banners. The focus of Anthony-Masterson's (Anthony is Christine's maiden name) commercial work is food photography, so the Georgia farmers and their fare were celebrated in clean, elegant, light and airy images worthy of Cooking Light.

The Mastersons met in the 1980s when they were both in the music business. Owen was a guitarist and singer/songwriter with the punk rock band Yanks. Christine was tour manager for the San Francisco New Wave band Romeo Void. Subsequently, they both left music for visual media. Owen worked in front of the camera as an actor (a bit part in the movie Fight Club) and model. Christine worked as a food stylist. One day in 2000, Christine made a proposal to Owen: "I have an idea. Why don't we become photographers?"

Self-taught, the Mastersons learned their art by observing the photographers and filmmakers with whom they worked. "We do everything together," says Owen of the couple's collaborative process. "Owen is like the cinematographer," says Christine. "I might be the art director."

After eight years as still photographers, the Mastersons set their pictures in motion in 2007 to create QuickTime movies for Georgia Organics to use as "Support Your Local Farmer" public service announcements. In 2008, they used a Flip Ultra video camera to make FARM!, a 13-minute documentary aimed at encouraging young people to go into farming.

Most recently, Anthony-Masterson has been busy with a borrowed Panasonic DVX100A shooting a 30-minute documentary about urban farmers within metropolitan Atlanta, and making a documentary about Georgia Organics' farmer-to-farmer mentoring program.

"They've kind of forged their own path and we're following them now," says Alice Rolls, executive director of 1,000-member Georgia Organics. Rolls says she has been amazed at how a couple who came to Georgia Organics three years ago to get connected with organic farmers in Georgia has not only helped "put a face on our food," but has also inspired the organization to improve its Web site, and has brought many innovative farming situations (such as farmers who work for residential developers) to the attention of Georgia Organics.

Georgia Organics reports that farmers' markets in Georgia have increased from 18 to 62 since 2005, and community-supported agriculture projects have grown from 8 to 35.

"They're really pushing us," says Rolls of the Mastersons. "We've got to catch up with them." But the Mastersons say all their work on behalf of Georgia Organics has essentially been enlightened self-interest.

"We now have our choice of farmers' markets to go to," says Christine. "So it's working," adds Owen.
